Help users get the right app with App Download Pages
Today we announced the launch of App Download Page, a new service for mobile developers and content owners seeking to provide a simple experience for their users to download the right mobile app for their phone, independent of device platform, model or carrier. To trial the service we worked with Facebook, whose mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected. To help fulfill that mission in an increasingly complex mobile environment, Facebook was one of the first companies to successfully use our new service.
Photobucket, the Web’s premier standalone photo and video-sharing site, has confirmed that it will be next on deck to roll out the service which will start later this fall – more companies are also lined up to do the same. Like Facebook, the company sees an increasing number of its Web users moving to mobile, but also faces the enormous challenge of handset fragmentation and platform proliferation.
“Due to the explosive growth of Photobucket Mobile, we’ve been seeking a simple solution for our users to find and download the right versions of our mobile apps, and we are delighted to be able to leverage GetJar’s expertise gained from their 500 million downloads,” said Michael Clark, senior vice president of technology and partnerships for Photobucket.
App Download Page works by providing mobile developers and content owners with a simple mobile webpage that can be linked to from any mobile site. When the mobile webpage is displayed on a phone, the device is automatically detected and the user is directed to the appropriate version of the partner’s mobile application for their phone located on GetJar. If no application exists, GetJar provides a free Mobile Site Shortcut, which is a small application that launches any phone’s native Web browser and redirects it to the appropriate mobile site.
Developers upload and manage all of their applications on the GetJar Developer site at http://my.getjar.com/site/Developers. Based on the experience gained over four years and over a half a billion downloads, the App Download Page service is a world-class solution for accurately detecting phones and quickly serving downloads to consumers independent of device, platform or carrier.

An App Store Comparison

Are App Stores Passe? Come see GetJar at TiE Silicon Valley
It’s our favorite topic: App Stores. Come to TiE Silicon Valley on Sept 8 and join the conversion.
Event description
As companies weigh the cost of developing device specific applications, the talk is that the Mobile Web would be the way to move forward, that mobile app stores were passe, that it is too costly for even large companies to do custom apps. for multiple platforms. What are the implications of this for developers? What are the short term investment vs. long term investment trade-offs? If it is an appstore, then what do developers bet on device specific app stores or open app stores? If app stores are to be the vehicle, how do they need to evolve from where they are at? What are the metrics that developers need to be thinking through? What are the device platforms that people should be betting on?

New targeting features for Pay per Download ads
If you use Pay per Download ads on GetJar, or have tried them in the past, you’re going to appreciate these new features that give you more control and flexibility to manage your promotions. Starting today, PPD campaigns can be:
- Targeted at any audience. Your ads can be displayed to any phone, geography, or combination of the two. If you only want a different ad message for BlackBerry traffic in the US, you can create an ad for just that target.
- Priced differently for any target. Users in some geographies or phones may have a higher value to you. Now you can set any bid price for any ad, allowing you to allow customer value with your acquisition cost.
- Created with multiple ads per app. There’s no limit to the number of ads you can create. Test different messages, targets, and bid prices to optimize your campaigns
In total, these new features allow you to customize ads specifically for each of your user segments and align your acquisition cost with the value of each segment.
Here’s a video tutorial showing how to set up a targeted campaign:
